i had an error once that sounded very similar to what you stated. it had something to do with a motor losing a reference point. i contacted winegusrd and they sent me a recalibration procedure. it takes you into a technical menu on the controller where you recalibrate the motor.
i also just did an internet search and there is een a youtube video from wineguard on how to do this recalibration. search youtube for 'wineguard el motor recalibration'.
