Small dishes, like those on mounted on a MH don't work well as you can not point them down far enough. SiriusXM only works in a couple spots and only for a couple miles of travel.

In AK dishes are pointed from horizontal to down. Apparently we are above the sky On the North Slope (Prudhoe Bay) where I work our dishes are 5 degrees of pointing horizontal.

Sat phones on the other hand work well.

I too have XM and Sirius. I sent an e-mail asking if they had a package to pay for both under one plan. They indicated at that time there was nothing, so one has to pay the full rate for each one.
Has anyone had any luck with combing XM and Sirius into one plan? I would love to have both.
Thanks

I was told the hardware was different - an XM radio receives XM signals, Sirius receives Sirius. We have several XM radios and our present motorhome came with Sirius. Each XM radio has it's own service account - billing is combined, I think (we pay electronically and do not look at the billing ofter). We were told it took different accounts for the Sirius - it could not be added to the XM.

With an antenna(trucker type-purchased in Homer) on our coach roof XM worked quite well all over Alaska(did not go north of Fairbanks, however).

I was told the same thing. Sirius and XM could not be combined with each other for multiple system discounts. However, after a few minutes on the phone, I got the XM Premier that essentially gave me all the Sirius channels I wanted at an introductory price comparable to a multiple system discount. The real discussion will come in January of 2012 when this "introductory offer" runs out. The operator in the Philippines that I spoke with did indicate there may be a discount for multiple units by that time. I can only hope. I refuse to pay the full price on two systems from a company that has combined and could easily give me multiple unit pricing if they just wanted to do so.

It's not just the hardware that's different. As I recall, XM uses a geosynchronus satellite while Sirius uses 3 satellites in elliptical orbit. This means that XM's bird is always directly above the equator while the Sirius ones move around but at any given time 2 of the three will be above the USA. Thus one would think that Sirius might work better in Alaska.
