16000 grain water sofener DIY

I bought a older fiberglass canister that's the same size as the popular 16000 grain units. Got it used from a RV owner that was no longer using it.

So took it apart cleaned it up and getting ready to refill the Cation Exchange Resin that is a light gold or light amber. 1/2 cuft. Question I have as this is the first time I've had a softener ...do I need to add salt now?

Thanks

Does that canister have the basket/down tube that keeps resin inside?

Does that canister have the head with separate inlet/out flows ?

Salt is used to REGEN after resin beads are coated with minerals (calcium etc)
REGEN is done without flow to RV...flow is trickle stream out onto ground

There's more to a portable water softener then just pouring resin into a canister.

I don't think so - when you purchase resin it is already happy and ready to pull minerals out of the water. What is recommended is to sanitize the whole thing before use (there are arguments over using bleach or not - but I use bleach on mine once a year). Although if you are on regular city water without a filter first then the chlorinated water will probably negate the need to sanitize it.

Then you may want to get hardness test strips (I bought mine new and it came with 50 test strips) and use them once a week or so to test the hardness of the water coming out. The hardness of the water going in will determine how long it will last until it needs a recharge. The salt is needed to recharge it (the salt goes in and is flushed through - where the resin switches out the minerals for sodium making it ready to take out the minerals again).

If the water going through has a lot of iron in it - then iron out is recommended during the recharge to remove the iron from the resin. You can get iron out at home depot or Walmart.

If you have not had one before - I would look up instructions online for one of the popular models like On the Go water softeners. Something like this https://www.portablewatersoftener.co...p-instructions

You will need the strips for water hardness.
TDS is for checking Total Dissolved Solids, used for DI and RO water filters.

We seldom use the test strips. Once you have softened water. You can feel the difference in the water when you wash your hands or shower.

Did it come with another tank for the brine? The softener will flow the brine through the medium to recharge. Some have a separate tank and some have the resin tank sitting inside the brine tank.
