8HDKAK onan status light stays lit

Background: we moved into site 13 (I thought it was site 12...) and in the first week lightning struck the tree a few feet in front of my coach. I found the radio antenna from the roof on the ground in front of the motorhome.

Today's question regards my Onan 8K quiet generator. We had to replace house batteries, chassis batteries were ok. But the status light is on ALL THE TIME, not just when warming up/starting the generator. According to the manual, that means the battery polarity is reversed. But the generator starts and runs fine. If the battery polarity was reversed, how could the generator start? Wouldn't the starter motor spin the wrong way?

Has anyone experienced this? We're full timers, working as a volunteer camp host at this point. We run the generator an hour or two every day. That it works is a blessing, but I'm quite concerned that it has a problem that will either mess it up or stop it from working.

Here's hoping that I'm missing something big and easy. Please help me figure this out.

Interesting one. Reversed polarity would likely blow fuses or smoke a board.

A lightening strike can do all kinds of crazy things.

I have seen metal antenna site doors welded shut. Circuit board pull out tabs welded to the face of the equipment rack and the circuit boards still working fine.

It could be some sort of arc in one of the start switches.

Does the switch on the generator show any symptoms?

Find the harness that comes from the switches and disconnect it. Then run the generator from its local panel.

The harness is probably along the left side as you are facing the front of the generator. The start/stop button would be on your right hand side.

Don' know the timing of changing batteries but a thread today suggested removing the battery cable and letting the thing sit for a few minutes to clear its head. A lightening strike could definitely scramble a computers brain and need a memory dump to shake it off.

Good input!

I have disconnected the DC power and gave it a nice long nap, but the sypmtoms remain.

The start/stop switch on the generator and in the coach show the exact same symptoms.
I'll start disconnecting/serious trouble shooting tomorrow. Will definitely report any learnings back here.
