Air Conditioning Dilemma

I have a 1990 Country Coach Concept motorhome. It's on a Gillig chassis and has two separate R22 basement air conditioning units. The compressor has gone bad on the living room unit and I haven't been able to find anyone willing or able to work on it. Does anyone know if I can have this system replaced with something like a 410A system or convert the old system? The bedroom AC works great but I'm sure I'll be faced with the same dilemma down the road with it as well someday. I'm in California and I have tried contacting Country Coach Corporation (CCC) to see if they can help but they haven't answered yet.

Any input is appreciated!

If you will take the unit out of the coach and take it to a contractor, you will have a much better chance to get them to do the repair.

That is something that I really do not understand. Most techs I know once they see the units tell me that they are just basic park model unit air conditioners like they service in mobile home parks and use components that they can find a match for at most any supply house.

I wish I could do that but it's not a self contained unit that can be removed. The components are really buried. I'll look again to see if there's any way to remove it intact.

You are probably on "death watch" with units that old anyway....probably time to figure out how you are going to update your A/C assets.....

Neil-

I agree. The system is about as basic as they come. However, it's unbelievable how difficult it has been trying to get anyone to even just look at it.
I'm thinking I may try to contact a mechanical engineering company and see if they would be willing to build a replacement system. I suppose I could have a rooftop unit installed but I don't want to cut a giant hole in the one piece fiberglass roof.

Agreed. I would love to find out how to go about replacing the system with a modern (410A) system. I think I will have to have it custom made. $$$

My local repair shop has just finished removing our basement air and replacing it with two 15k dometic rooftop slimlines one over galley and one over bedroom using original central air ducts. Have not field tested it yet as we are having some other things done also but at the shop it works great and cools very quickly. Temps. here have been around 100. Also they adapted the old basement air case into another storage compartment. should have it back by this weekend.

Russ, you might check the dimensions of this replacement unit and see if it will fit in your space. Contrary to what some say on forums, these self contained units are still being made.
