Allison trans:Where do I put the fluid?

2006 Freightliner chassis with Allison Trans. Changing the fluid and filter. I am sure I can put the new fluid in where the dipstick goes but there is a reserve container for fluid with 2 hoses going to it. It says Hydraulic fluid and Trans synd transmission on it. The fluid appears to be trans fluid and the regular hydraulic fluid for the jacks is up front. I am guessing that this is for the trans fluid and wondering if I can add the new fluid there. I will be able to verify that it is for trans fluid if it empty when I drain the trans. Can find nothing in the manuals.

That reservoir is for your power steering fluid, not your transmission.

You have to fill tranny from the dipstick tube. I cleaned the end and clamped a couple feet of hose to the outside of mine and to a large funnel zip tied to a ladder. It filled the 5 gallons a lot faster than a small funnel

Buy 6' of cheap clear plastic hose.

From your 5 gallon pail of Allison 668, pour 1 quart into another container (capacity with change= 19 quarts).

Put the bucket on a ladder above the dip stick tube.

Start a siphon, sit back and have an adult beverage while gravity does the job.

SInce I already had bought the 1 gal containers I drained the fluid, unscrewed the filter and drained it. Put the new filter on and installed the plug. The nice thing is that the filler/ dipstick hole is lower than the oil filler and I could get a funnel in under the "hood". I poured in the same amount less one quart judging using the clear stripe on the side of the last one. I started the engine and ran it for a few minutes shifting forward and back to get the filter filled then I added the last quart. I drove it home and parked it. Tomorrow I will check it using the electronic readout and the dipstick. Since I did both front and rear engine oil and filters I'll check them too. Thanks for the advice.

You will need to get the transmission up to full operating temperature for the fluid level to read accurately from the shift pad.

Think 25 highway miles.
