Atwood G6A 8E Water Heater not staying lit

Hello Friends,
I'm a brand new RV'er. Just bought a 1988 Mallard Sprinter last week with the Atwood Water Heater G6A 8E, DSI.
When I turned on the switch inside the coach, it fired up initially. I kept it on for about 20 -30 mins. Then, I realized that there probably wasn't much or any water in the tank.
Now I have filled it with water, checked my faucets and they are flowing water (cold though since my water heater isn't working).
The burner runs for about 15 seconds and I hear a "clicking" sound. then the flame shuts off. I've done that several times and it never stays firing.
Any suggestions on what I probably screwed up by running it without sufficient water?
Thank you very much.
Joseph
