Atwood 6 gal electric/propane with electronic ignition water heater fires up and heats water great..but won't auto. shut off...pressure valve blows..releases water/steam..and water runs out of relief valve until I manually shut it off.

Need to look at the t-stat on the front make sure they are up to the tank and touching, it sounds like this doing it only on gas. The t-stats could be stuck and need to be replaced, it should have shut down on the back up t-stat @ 180 the first on shuts @ 140 then the valve blows sounds like they are not touching I've never seen both fail but there is always a first last resort is the control board is faulty. You might beable to test the t-stats with a heat gun and a meter to see if they open

thanks..from the looks of the diagram..the t-stats are behind the plate with 4 wires (two red two brown)..is this easily removed to check??? when you say..not touching...do you mean the wires? or the actual t-states?

I mean the t-stat body it self they have to touch the tank there should be some clear plastic washer looking retainers holding them in that can be removed with a flat screwdriver just twist them take a picture or a diagram of the wires there is 2 temps with those t-stats 140 and 180 put them back in the same order or water could heat to 180 OUCH!!! The plate is a soft cover that just sticks in place if you have to replace them you will get a new cover also those are 12V stats the ones in the back are for the 120V and are 120V stats be sure to say that and check them as they look identical

Hopefully that's it but if it's the board then unplug it remove the 2 small 1/4 inch screws get the number off it try to look on ebay for some new ones they should be cheaper in price than the dealership.
