Then you have a Standard Model ......no Mixing Valve
The brass fitting is the Check Valve
it is a plastic plunger/spring/o-ring assembly inside the fitting
Probably clogging up
Remove/clean..replace...do away with---your choice
Check valve is there to prevent backflow into WH Tank when Bypassed
Install a shutoff valve and get rid of the check valve which clog/fail

Nipple screws into Hot outport
Try to slightly tighten to break free then unscrew
Gut the internals.....small 'c' clip on end of plunger then assembly can be push out
Reuse nipple ...hot line fitting screws onto it
