Batteries Bad

I need to replace the 2 batteries in my 5th wheel trailer. It is permanently parked and plugged in so my question is 1. do I need a battery? 2. Can I just get 1 battery since I am plugged into power 100% of the time ?

One deep cycle 12 VDC battery OR two 6 VDC deep cycle batteries wired in series to make a 12 VDC battery should be just fine.

If you have a smart charger or smart converter, it/they will last a long time.

First, your signature line does not give us a clue as to how old or what make and/or model your RV might be other than you said it is a 5th wheel, so that limits our ability to help. But not knowing anything else, my first answer would be yes, you could just put one new battery in place of the two, and I would opt for replacing what you have over going with no battery. My reason for saying that is that the device in your RV that converts the 120 VAC (Volts AC) to 12 VDC (Volts DC) for charging your battery may want to have that battery for filtering or regulation or possibly even for assisting with any large loads.

There is one additional benefit, assuming you have an inverter, it would give you some carryover in the event of short outages on the utility's 120 VAC supply, which can be really nice. It is, in effect, a very good UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) within the limits of the battery's ability to deliver.

One cheap battery or none at a will work for your stationary 5er.

Don't leave a bad battery connected , that can hurt your converter.

Twinboat's comment is good. 1998 Carriage Conestoga 38 ft 5th Wheel makes the converter more than 20 years old. Technology back then is likely to require a working battery.

Get make and model of converter. Look up a manual for it.

I wish you good luck and happy trails ahead!

So what is your new RV?

2 batteries provided added DC Capacity.....not needed if not boondocking and just parked/connected to AC Power

It helps if you put that information in your signature. Go to your "User CP" to add it to your signature.
