Be careful where you add oil on your generator!

This was brought to me today, a Cummins/Onan HDK series 10kw genset that was shutting down in an overheat code. As you can see someone during the last oil change poured several quarts of oil into the coolant tank instead of the oil fill. It would've been easy to clean at that point but someone decided to just add oil in the proper place and leave this alone so they ran it for 30 minutes or so until it overheated.

Ugh

10 hrs later and I managed to flush the entire system and so far it's running well - fingers crossed no permanent damage was done.

I bet if he had looked in the mirror he would have seen the dip-stick.

Take care,
Stu

A short video while back flushing thru the engine. This stuff had the consistency of hand lotion - what you see dropping out was in the engine, not the radiator. I removed the radiator later in the day to flush it entirely.

If you don't mind sharing, how did you go about cleaning the entire system of the oily residue?

A good radiator flush product, very hot water and lots of patience.
