Black stain above the water heater

so what would cause a black stain above the water heater, what would make it over heat, the electric or gas or both on for too long.

Black stains on the sidewall above the heater is usually a sign on incomplete combustion - time to have the burner serviced.

Nothing to do with use of electric...element is inside the WH Tank submerged in water

Sooting is from a dirty burner assembly, dirty orifice, dirty combustion chamber, lack of proper air mixture-----ALL having to do with the propane

Spiderweb in burner tube/combustion chamber is enough interference to cause sooting
