Changing oil on Onan 5500
Have recently bought a 1999 Fleetwood Pace Arrow 37, how do I go about changing the oil/filter on the Ona 5500 and how frequenlty?

I own a 5500 onan and it is very simple......pull the oil plug on bottom of generator...do it out of the wind or be in enclosed garage or oil will blow whatever way the wind is blowing. The filter you need to have the filter wrench that fits on the bottom of the filter because there is no room on the sides of the filter for the pliers looking wrenches. Make sure when you take the old one out you dont do like I did the first time and make sure the old gasket comes out with the old filter. I always change mine 2 times a year or every 50 hrs. Also when you put the new oil back in it take your time because it goes in real slow. Also dont forget to take spark arrestor off once you got your new oil in and run the generator for 2-3 mins. Anything else or help you need just ask plenty of people have different ideas on things. Good Luck

If you don't have an owner's manual, you might consider downloading one...lots of good info in it.

Why does the spark arrestor need to come off (or am I misunderstanding what a 'spark arrestor" is?)

I believe you guys are getting two generators mixed up. a 1999 would have the old 1800 rpm bgm series generator. bhemke has a onan 5500 gold. These are two completely different generators.

Have a learned a great deal from this forum. Is there a download on this forum fro the Generator....found one for my MH....This forum Rocks! Cant wait to meet some folks on the Road...Although realize that it is not all peaches and cream out there.

The manufacturer owners manual (readily available on the Internet.) Will tell you. They usually go by the number of hours the generator is used. Something like every 100 hours, for example. I change mine annually regardless of the hours it was used in order to keep contaminants to a minimum. Cheap insurance in my book.

We have multiple low usage vehicles (MH, Jeep, old truck) and other misc. engines (MH genny, house backup genny, lawn tractor). All get annual oil changes and other recurring services in my birthday month.

The 7,000w gas Onan series HG should use this generic owner's manual that is attached which covers both the 7,000 and the 5,500.
...it's in a pdf
At least take a look at it and see if it's what you need.
