In my opinion, fixing the existing system is the proper way to handle this problem, since you probably will not be the only owner of this "land yacht" for all time. The next owner deserves to know that you had pride enough to fix, rather than patch, problems.

that fixing the existing system is the proper way to handle any RV problem.
BTW my coach, like many other motor homes, (as well as millions of cars and trucks), was built
without the capability of chassis battery charging while on shore or generator power.
That has NEVER been a problem in the 14 years, (116k miles), I've owned my coach because I:
1.) Have
eliminated all unnecessary 12V parasitic draws.
2.) Use
common sense chassis battery energy management.
