Coleman Mach 3 heater accessory problem

Hello,

I have a Coleman Mach 3 Plus that works well as my rear A/C. I purchased and installed the heat strip accessory. Now when I set the thermostat (wall-mounted) to heat, the A/C runs and blows cold air (as if I set it to cool), but there's no heat and the heat strip doesn't warm up.

I've disconnected all the control wires except for what's needed for the thermostat to call for heat, and it still starts the compressor and just blows cooled air, so I think the thermostat isn't the problem.

Does anyone know what might be wrong?

One additional piece of information: At this location there originally was a heat pump. But, it broke in the Florida summer and, being desperate for air conditioning, I just had the service shop install the Mach 3 that is an air conditioner only, which has worked well. Perhaps they re-used the original control board for the heat-pump and there's a jumper somewhere I need to change? I've looked at can't find one...but I could have missed something.

Thanks!

I have not been able to find operating or installation instructions for Coleman Mach 3 Plus.

Please post the exact model number for your A/C.

Please post the exact model of the heat kit.

Better advice may be available with this information.

The instructions for a heat kit reference installation in a unit with controls on the ceiling face panel. It instructs to install an included knob that allow for operating the heat kit.

The kit may not be designed to use with a heat pump control system. Your description sound like you are trying to use a remote climate control system that may not work with your kit.

If you are trying to use a remote climate control system, please post exact make and model of climate control system.

For those who might be interested, here's some new developments:

I pulled the cover off the control box, and there was a jumper labeled "HP" and "Non-HP". It was set to "HP", so I changed it to "Non-HP". Sure enough, the air conditioning no longer comes on when I set the thermostat to heat. Yay!

However, the heat strip still doesn't come on. I ran out of time, but in the future (probably a week or two from now), I'll take off the top cover to see if there's also a jumper that needs changing there (especially since I noticed that the wire to the heating strip comes from somewhere above), take my multi-meter to see if power turns on for the heat strip, and maybe bench test the heat strip to see if it's functioning properly.

As @Persisitent points out, there's no manual available online for the Coleman Mach 3 Plus, which is frustrating. So all I can do is continue to trace stuff and figure it out.

Coleman lists this heat strip, which is titled "Electric Heat Kit for Coleman-Mach Air Conditioners" to work with the Coleman Mach 3 Plus.

Did you ever figure this out? I just added the electric heat strips and replaced the control board and t-stat with what Coleman told me to, but there is no “HEAT ELEC” option. It only has “HEAT”. I was hoping you figured your issu out and I may have the same issue.

Thanks,
Wayne

Hi Wayne,

No, I haven't worked any more on the problem. Once it got hot here, that distracted me from trying to figure out the heater. If I do spend some time on it before it gets too cold, I'll be sure to update the forum.

Thanks. I have an email in to Coleman, so if I get mine figured out, I will also post an update.

I spoke with Coleman and it sounds like my issue is that the thermostat wasnít programmed properly from the factory. They are sending me a replacement. Iíll try to remember to post once I receive it and try it.

The replacement thermostat came in today. It works great. Evidently the previous thermostat came programmed wrong from the factory.

Thanks for the update.

For clarification, when you write "thermostat", you're referring to the one on the wall where the user sets the temperature?
