Converter issue/caution

I was running a WFCO 8955 converter and ran into a strange issue. I say strange because it throws a wrench into some trouble shooting methods.

In my case the converter ran fine with a small load. Plugged into shore power I could run my radio and lights no problem but it couldn't run the bathroom fan or any larger load. I noticed it when I disconnected my battery and had only the converter powering the trailer. I'm upgrading to LiFePO4 so I replaced it with a Progressive Dynamics PD9160ALV.

Sitting on my bench the 8955 puts out 13.66 volt as long as the load is under a couple of amps. When the load goes up, the voltage drops. Another note; it does get warm and the fan doesn't seem to come on.

Bottom line: testing the converter voltage (with no load) may not be a good indicator of a good converter.

WFCO testing is to be done with Reverse Polarity Fues removed.....if voltage is good (13.3 - 13.7) then install the Reverse Polarity fuse and test UNDER Load (13.3 - 13.7)

Testing done with Battery connected
Testing done between Neg Lug and VCC Lug on DC Fuse Board

Different testing/different brands
Some want battery cable removed before testing
*PD9100/9200 Battery NEG cable disconnect at converter for testing
