Desperate for help with microwave!

I have a Magic Chef model MCO2212ARW over-the-range microwave with built-in hood vent. It has burned up (as in smoked) twice and I would like to replace it with another brand. The only one I can find is a Dometic DOTR12CB at Adventure RV and they want $375 for it. I can get the Magic Chef repaired for $160.00 labor plus parts, but I'm really afraid of it now. I have searched extensively and can't find anything. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Take a look at Sharp . They have a couple of models that could be adapted pretty easily!

Our microwave died on us. We just measured the old one, went to Lowes and purchased another one. They all mount in similar fashion. Our model Sharp had a somewhat different mounting but we modified the upper cabinet and installed the new one. Most under cabinet MW are 29 3/4 inches wide and around 15-16 inches deep. Take the old one down, see how it is mounted and purchase another one. chances are the same mount will work. Ed

I replaced the Sharp Convection/Microwave in my MH this summer with a GE Conv/Micro.

The new GE unit is significantly larger (cooking capicity), and also more powerful then the old Sharp unit. It mounts in the same space. The most difficult part of the swap was that these things weigh about 80 pounds. The vent (rear) lined up with only some new foam weather stripping.

I suggest anyone considering replacing a Micro or Conv/Micro take a look at comments on this site about them. I, and others, have not had good results with Sharp units.

P.S. I ordered the unit on line, and it was delivered to my door in about three days.
The price was right, and Lowe's and Home Depot don't stock Conv/Micros.

In the stick & brick homes our kids live in, we've had good luck with wall-mounted Samsung and LG microwaves. I think I've installed five of them! They were all 30" models and all had built-in fans and ductwork to interface with an exhaust system.

Whether they would work in an RV, I don't know.

I our s&b, we have a countertop Sharp Carousel that has been trouble-free for over 11 years. Since DW is on the short side, over-the-stove versions don't work too well.

We have a GE Advantium in ours. Haven't had any problems other then low voltage from the park we were in. No damage, just didn't cook well at that time. Works fine when voltage is OK.

The Advantium is more expensive but we deleted the gas stove and gained two drawers. The Advantium does take some getting used to though as it cooks faster so you have to adjust times.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! We could not find another unit that was narrow enough and had a built-in vent hood for the stove, except the one at Adventure RV at $375. We found another Magic Chef just like the old one for $187, and decided to take a chance on another one. We did get a 3-year extended warranty, so if the thing is going to burn up maybe it will do it within the 4-year warranty period!

Ours died too, same model from our 2004 Georgetown, there none available. We've found a couple of possible replacements but still looking.

$160 for repairs - way out of line - should be closer to $50 to $75 for repairs

How are you powering the unit?
Generator - Inverter or synchronous type?
Shore power - Do you have a surge guard?
Inverter - sine wave or Modified sine wave?

This MW is in a 5th wheel that we have. It was only used with shore power. The new one has worked fine so the problem is solved.

We are trying to sell the 5er now.

Joe,

I am wondering how a Magic Chef Microwave got into your coach. They normally came with excellent Sharp units.

Possibly it was replaced before you bought the coach.

Mine is still the original and one thing I highly recommend is not to run the microwave off the inverter but rather use the generator when you need to use the microwave.

Some owners who have used the microwave on the inverter have had early failures.

The GE Advantiums don't like MSW inverters or at least ours doesn't. Haven't let the smoke out of the Advantium but it doesn't cook well so I don't try it now.

Richard, the MW is in a 5er we pulled for 10 years before getting the MH. We are trying to sell the 5er now.
