Does Anyone Know What A Expansion Chamber Is When Dealing With The Dash A/C?

We have completely gone thru the dash A/C on our coach (new compressor/no leaks/new thermostat control and a few other items). We still don't get very cold air from the vents. The motorhome A/C tech said it might be the expansion chamber? Ok all you A/C pro's out there learn me about expansion chambers! Thanks in advance.

I had vent doors on my old rig that didn't work properly and I found a vacuum hose off of what looked like a number ten can. Maybe that is it?

Here's a link to some previous threads that discusses an expansion valve.
Maybe there's some answers in them. Good luck.

A expansion tank is used in auto A/C units to protect the compressor from liquid returning to the compressor through the suction line from the evaporator.

Hope this helps!

Never seen an expansion chamber on an automotive AC system. But from your description of your problem, I would check your heater water valve to be sure it's not flowing during the the time you're trying to cool your coach.

You should be able to shut the heater water flow off at the engine by the two ball valves that are installed on most Diesel engines.

Try that and see if it helps.

You may have an orifice tube to change the high pressure liquid to low pressure liquid. This acts as the expansion valve. It is a plastic tube with a very small hole which the liquid passes thru. This hole is protected by a very fine mesh screen. Debris from your previous compressor can plug up the screen, cutting back the flow. It is located in the freon line just as it enters the evaporator. Unfortunately the system will require evacuation in order to find our.
This may be what the tech is referring to. Suction accumulators, which prevent liquid freon from entering a compressor, are normally found on heat pump units.

Thermal expansion

Did he say expansion valve of expansion chamber? Your system can have both.

A TXV type air conditioning system uses a Thermal Expansion Valve to regulate the quantity of refrigerant entering the evaporator. The expansion valve adjusts the amount of liquid refrigerant flowing into the evaporator depending on the temperature inside the passenger compartment. The purpose is to ensure that all of the refrigerant leaving the evaporator is vaporized so no liquid coolant gets into the compressor. A TXV is located where the refrigerant enters the evaporator and is separates the high pressure side of the system from the low pressure side.

Automotive AC systems typically have a muffler to dampen pulsations and noise caused by pressure pulses that are generated in the gaseous refrigerant by the action of the compressor. The pulsations are absorbed in the muffler when the gaseous refrigerant is allowed to expand into a large chamber called the expansion chamber and also with the use of a system of baffles. The expansion chamber is just a chamber in the muffler which has no moving parts and is unlikely to fail and need replacing. The muffler is a steel cylinder in the low pressure line and usually mounted vertically.

I hope this help to clear up some of the confusion.
