Dometic basement Refer/freezer

We have a Dometic 110/12 volt refrigerator/freezer in our basement that has been a faithful servant for many years. Just fired it up for our summer trip and it will not run on 110v. Only 12v. I have checked the continuity of the power cord, I have insured there is 110v at the outlet, I have even plugged the 110v cord into another know good outlet. Still compressor will not run on 110v. My question is simple. Is the compressor a 12v unit that runs off a 110 to 12v converter in the unit? If so, I guess my converter in the fridge is bad. Hope somebody can shed some light on this. It runs fine on the 12v system in the motorhome.

Please provide the model number. Also, how old is the unit?

I have one as well from 2005. I suspect it has a 12v compressor with a step down power supply from 120vac to 12vdc as it is pretty efficient. It only uses a little over 2 amps to run on 12vdc. It also is less expensive to build a converter than an inverter.
However now you have me curious and will have to look at mine when I get it back from repairs

Hi RV Wizard,
The model number of my freezer is MRFT 60. S/n LPN0068. Thanks for any insight you might have on my problem.

The unit is a Norcold MRFT 60. It was installed as original equipment by Newmar 2003. Finally got some data on the unit. It had a 12v DC compressor that is run by a built in inverter. Supposed to switch to AC when AC power is available. It no longer does that. Thanks for any help you might have for me on this issue.

Mine is a Norcold MRFT 60. It does run on an inverter. 110 v AC or 12/24 volt DC. Mine no longer will run on AC. Still works great on 12 v. I guess I am screwed . No longer made and .

I wouldn't worry about it. When connected to shorepower, your converter/charger is supplying the 12v side of the coach so batteries won't run down....just make sure it's being fed from the house batteries. It's more efficient running on 12v anyway.

I agree that due to its age that repairing it to operate on 120vac is not wise. Just continue to use the 12 vdc mode until one day it quits completely and then replace it with another if you wish. I have one that I have operated like this for several years in my sun room (bank of batteries and inverter charger).

Thanks for all the input on my freezer. We plan on using it until it dies. It is built so ruggedly with very little plastic unlike the new units. Take care all my RV2 friends and thank again for the help.

The thing is still running. 100 lbs of frozen food in it. 7 days on the road this week. Keeping fingers crossed.

As long as coach is plugged in to shore power or while your driving the Bird System will maintain all your batteries if you always leave your battery cut off switch on, in fact any time you use coach that switch should be on.
You will find all this info in the links below in my signature.
Enjoy your travels.

Just finished our 6000 mi trip and summer in Northern Idaho. Freezer never missed a beat on 12 v power. Going to run it until the wheels fall off.
