Dometic or Norcold Fridge Not Cooling

Does fridge defend indicate Overheating on GAS only
OR does it also show overheating when using Electric?

*Both heat sources do same thing...provide heat to boil the ammonia into a vapor

Overheating can be due to:
Low Propane System Pressure
Dirty burner/orifice

Faulty Electric Heater Element

Cooling UNIT blockage OR a LEAK

Does fridge not get below 50*F on gas, on electric or both?

What temp is freezer?

Have you checked the food compartment drip tray drain tube?
Broken/cracked or bug plug missing warm air can be drawn in making food compartment warmup

Door seals......have you checked them?

Ventilation, draft ad/or inadequate heat generates insufficient quantity of ammonia vapor needed to absorb heat from Both freezer & food compartment

Questions/Clarifications:

50*F.....that is temp in food compartment Correct?

Freezer temps?

Better on Gas vs Electric....how much better?

Works great if below 90*F Ambient air temp.......that suggests Draft/Airflow, Dead air space, warm air being drawn into food compartment (drain line/door seals etc), inadequate heat transfer (overheating due to lack of coolant flow) AND/OR Combination of above.
We believe that RVing should be fun, spending time trying to fix stuff is frustrating
There is a pattern on iRV2, and that pattern is that folks do not seem to know how to use the troubleshooting functions of the Fridge Defend.

In the quoted posts, these are very good questions.
It could be that after a number of posts the problem may be fixed?

It is clear that the owner of this fridge is frustrated when they state that they are on a schedule, and their fridge is not cooling.

Let's start with some facts:
  • The fridge boiler is responsible for running the entire refrigeration process
.
  • The refrigerant is the only thing that cools the boiler if one does not have a Fridge Defend
.
  • The Fridge Defend stores Diagnostic and Error Codes for troubleshooting.

With these facts, in the time it takes to make breakfast, one can diagnose their problem if they have the Fridge Defend.
Simply put the control into the setup mode by following the instructions.
Send us the diagnostic variables, and we can tell you the following:
  • How many times the Fridge Defend has displayed an error code.
  • If there is a problem with the cooling unit producing refrigerant.
  • If there is a problem with wiring to the fridge.

The above is a summary of the troubleshooting capabilities using the Fridge Defend.

This takes the guess work out of diagnostics by giving data that is used to make intelligent repairs. We have posted on our website videos and provide written instructions on how to use the Fridge Defend to solve your cooling issues.

Hope this helps fellow RV'ers do what they like best, we are here to help

Fridge Defend Versions

Hi Joe & Annette,

All of the Fridge Defend versions have diagnostics. So if you ever have a fridge problem, we have you covered

LONG ANSWER:

Like all products, as lessons are learned in the field, new features are added. I am not sure of which version of Fridge Defend you have?

PRE-COVID (2013-2020)

Thus, our v1.x does not have the same features as the v5.x for a number of reasons. One large factor is that pre-COVID, the cost of memory went down in microcontrollers, thus we took advantage of the lowering of cost by putting more features into the Fridge Defend. These features were mostly added troubleshooting capabilities. The core boiler and fan sensor technology has not changes from version 1.

POST-COVID (2020-2022

What is stated above, all bets are off. If we can even get parts, the cost has raised dramatically.

Thanks for your support, Paul and Mao
