Dometic refrigerator rusted at heating element..

Hey ya....I recently installed new a/c heating element on my Dometic RM2820...worked great for awhile...held at about 35 degrees in lower section.

Then it quit working.

What happened??...the steel tube that holds the heating element rusted away at the bottom leaving a hole as big as fingernail....burnt up the element too.

I want to buy a steel tube somewhere and somehow JB Weld it to the old one. Will it work?...needs to be the right steel I'm sure.

Or...can I "sleeve" the burnt up tube?

Anybody else come across this..thanks.

I'm not familiar with this sort of problem, but I'm sure you need to have excellent contact between the heating element and the boiler section. I'm not sure you can get that with jb-weld bonding a steel tube to the existing metal. Can you possibly strap a piece of metal over the "hole' and clamp it in place with screw type clamps. Id I understand you problem, this would allow you to attempt to use the lp gas heater to see if the unit is operational. be careful of leaking exhaust fumes while you try this.

I highly recommend a new cooling unit!!!! If the burner section of the boiler section on your cooling unit is rusting that bad then its overheating!!!! Norcolds have been known to burn (fire) not good. Mine was rusted as yours is and still worked. just caught in time as some charring had occured on some wiring in the refer compartment when I removed refer to install Amish cooling unit. Works loads better
