Dometic RM2862 recall info

Hello folks. I just joined this forum.

I just got a used Dometic RM2862 fridge,

It needs a top hinge pin so I googled the model number and found a recall notice. I have no idea of how old the recall is or even the age of the unit itself, but other than the hinge pin issue the unit appears to be in great cosmetic condition.
I have not yet attempted a "power up" via ac power.
I assume the unit will work without a LP connection.

Any info regarding the recall issue, and any tips for me before I attemp a power up test?

Thank you.

This site will tell you what you need to know -

https://www.arprv.com/products.php

You can also search this site on “ARP control”.

You will find the recall does not prevent complete failure of the refrigeration’s system. The ARP System does.

Recall info?

Thanks for the reply, and I do appreciate the link to the safety system product, but it does not seem to have any info i could locate regarding the Dometic recall.

Nice advertising though.

Dometic Recall Information (from Dometic)
http://techsupport.pdxrvwholesale.co...he%20recall%3A

Sounds like you have a used fridge that is not installed....correct?
Needs 12VDC Power to operate AC or LP heating
Needs to be enclosed in a tight clearance cabinet to properly cool (not free standing in the garage)

With 12VDC power (fully charged battery connected) and the AC Power cord plugged in you can check controls and if the AC element gets hot (energized)
But free standing it will not cool down due to lack of DRAFT across backside of fridge

The recall mod is adding a temp sensor to boiler stack
12VDC to fridge goes to/thru the temp sensor then to fridge circuit board
If coolant temp get hot (375*F ????) the sensor trips shutting down DC to fridge ...fridge stops working
Sensor has a manual reset

The recall on our Dometic involved installing a secondary propane burner shield and relocating the over temperature sensor.

This is to contain any fire that might occur if the coolant ( ammonia ) was to start leaking .

Dometic will provide the recall kit free of charge and pay for installation, but requires an approved RV Shop to order the kit and do the installation.

The kits are available on eBay , but cost about $25 and you can either install it yourself or pay to have it done.

We had a local independent RV Shop do the recall and we're glad we did . The job was done right and at no cost .

Regarding running the frig on 110v , yes , it will run on 110v without the propane hooked up but it does require 12v to run the control panel.

hello, Thanks Old Biscuit and Bill,
this was exactly the kind of info i was looking for.

Also, not being familiar with the operation, I was not fully aware of the draft situation regarding the enclosure area for proper operation. I did read through the manual and saw the safety requirements for ventilation. I'm glad I checked in here on the forum before a began any power up. Thanks!

I have a request into Dometic (on line email contact) with my inquiry.
I know this is and older unit, but it is in very good condition.
I actually did the removal from a old RV that was going to be scrapped.
So, I did see the way it was installed in the ventilated enclosure area.

I am going to do a close inspection to see if I can identify weather the recall kit was installed. Thanks for the description of the recall kit components.

I'm guessing Dometic may come back with an answer if recall was done, assuming they keep such records. I supplied them with the serial # info.

I just was hoping I could do a temp power up just to see if the unit works, before investing too much effort into it. I do plan on installing the unit if I can confirm or otherwise arrange the recall. Dometic might tell me they no longer process the recall???

Is there any market for used parts on these units if I decide not to move forward and part out the unit?

The unit is in very good condition so maybe trim, handles, shelves, control board could be of use to someone.

Thanks again guys!

Selling it....maybe $100-$200 bucks....Maybe

Recall Done

Before

After

With Burner Shield In place

You CAN hookup 12VDC (battery) and plug in the AC Power Cord
to test functions
Upper display works
Auto ...will energize the AC Element
Unplug the AC Power Cord...fridge should swap to GAS and then CHECK Light come on as there is no LP connected
**when it swaps to GAS you should hear/feel the gas solenoid CLICK and the Spark Electrode Fire (Click, Click, Click) then stop and repeat then Check Light (flame failure)

At least you will know if it functions
Cooling?????
Let it run on AC Element for couple hours with fan blowing upward at backside (element should draw roughly 2.7A---325W element and should test at 44 ohms)

Freezer plate should get cool but that is about all the cooling that can/will occur due to it be out in the open

Now the question(s):
Was it mfg during 2003--2006
After 2006?

Recall was never done?

Check your S/N against these
serial numbers beginning with the following combinations:
320xxxxx through 352xxxxx
40lxxxxx through 452xxxxx
50lxxxxx through 552xxxxx
60lxxxxx through 639xxxxx

From the S/N it sounds like a 2003 vintage

I agree with OldBisquit - just put a fan in it to create an updraft. It doesn’t take much.

You could also cut a cardboard surround similar to what it would have in its installation. I wouldn’t run it for days this way, but at least long enough to insure it is getting cold.

Hello Folks,
Thanks again for the suggestions for testing the dometic fridge.
I set it up with 12vdc and 120vac. Set it to auto.

As described, The relay clicked and it attempted to fire spark igniter.
then to auto ac operration.
It took about 30-40 minutes for the rear fins to warm up.
after 2.5 to 3 hours, i measured -5 degrees F in freezer; fridge interior fins are now cooling. I read it takes about 4-5 hours for fridge to do the initial cool down, so, I believe at this point, the unit appears to be working correctly with 120vac operation.
I will continue to monitor it for a few more hours before shut down.
(yes, I set a fan near the rears coils and it seems to be doing a good job to draft the coils)

as soon as i get the proper gas line fittings, i will connect to LP gas to check LP operation.

At max cold setting, I just measured 25 degrees F in fridge. (about 4-5 hrs run time).

It appears to be working nicely on 120AC.
Hopefully tomorrow I can check LP operation.

My clamp on AC amp meter is broken...does any know aprox AC amp draw on this unit?
Install sheet says use 5amp AC fuse on this circuit, so Im guessing 3.5-4 amps?
