I do have a question. The heater has a 1.5 flex hose coming out of the heater but the other end is not connected to anything, is it supposed to be?

Either one is not good to have going off, and still indicates a problem that could kill you. Are you sure the propane detector is not a combination Propane/CO detector? because a lot of them are combo units. At this point it is irrelevant, from everything you have posted you have a dangerous problem with your furnace that threatens life no mater what detector is going off.
My recommendation at this point is that you call in a qualified RV Repair service.
Good luck,
Dave

When you burned up the 'nest' it damaged the gas valve/combustion chamber gasket
Will need new gasket once you have washed out the heat exchanger

I don't know how hot it gets but there are some 2,100 F rated materials on this page. I don't think it gets that hot, even my propane forge which purposely traps in the heat only gets to 2,300 or so, with air blowing through it won't get anywhere near that hot.

I don't know. When we used to hot rod Briggs and Stratton powered minibikes we would use heavy aluminum foil for the head gasket, but that was a solid, machined surface. Did you see the 2100F white material?
