Dometic Side by Side Conversion

This thread is to give kudos to a conversion by JC Refrigeration in Shipshewana, In.
Near the end of our snowbird stay in south Florida the 16 year old Dometic stopped refrigerating. A local mobil tech confirmed that the coils were plugged, and it was indeed dead. I made an appointment with JC refrigeration for a 12 volt DC electric conversion.
It was a six hour drive from home base in south central Ohio, and the appointment was at 8:00 AM ( they open at 6:00 ). So we chose to drive up the night before, and parked in back of their assembly building. Shipshewana is in the heart of the Amish country, and we saw many horse and buggy rigs on the local roads, as well as very well maintained farms. When I pulled the rig around to the front of the building in the morning, there were about seven or eight bicycles parked out front, and no motorized vehicles.
It was a tough installation for them, as the Dometic needed to be pulled out of the cabinet, turned 90 degrees, and then hoisted up over the kitchen counter that contained faucets sticking up. They said it took four their employees to do it, and believe me these fellows look strong.
While they were working we visited the Shipshewana flea market ( touted as the largest flea market in the midwest ) .
We left the fridge turned on, and by the time we got home, the freezer was at -3 degrees, and the fridge was at 33 degrees.

If my absorption cooling unit ever goes out again that's exactly what I would replace it with! Jr. is a great guy to deal with!

I got the same conversion, but had a Freon leak. I think it is fixed.

I have a couple of questions. Do you have the Dometic side by side? I have a 1292. I have to set the fridge on 5 to get zero in the freezer and adequate cooling in the refrigerator.

By the way, JR has been great. And, I recommend them profusely.

Hey Paul, Yes i believe mine is a 1292 also. We haven't used it enough to know what the settings will be. However, on the way home to southern Ohio from northern Indiana, it got down to below zero in the freezer with a middle of the range setting. i'm looking forward to hard ice cream this coming winter while snow birding in southern Florida.
By the way, the meat locker drawer in for the refrigerator is cracked and needs to be replaced. These drawers are quite shallow, and I can't find a replacement. Do you have any ideas ?

Sorry for my slow response. I have been having some issues with my 12 vdc conversion and did not want to misrepresent the performance of the conversion.

I had a Freon leak from one of the solder joints on the high pressure line leaving the compressor. It was so small that normal leak detectors could not find it. However, it kept the freezer from performing as anticipated.

JR has been very helpful and supportive.

I believe I have found and repaired the leak. Today, it is 90 degrees here and 80% humidity. I have 5 degrees in the top of the freezer. The ice I put in the bottom of the freezer has not melted. The bottom shelf of the refrigerator is 39 degrees.

But the compressor seems to run full time to achieve those results.

I have it set on 4 with the thermistor in the middle position.

If it keeps performing the same, I will be very pleased. JR and I have talked about installing a resister in the power circuit that will increase the performance by about 10%. But, I have not asked him for that modification, yet.

I do not know what a meat tray is. I have two "Dometic" plastic slide out containers below the bottom shelf that we use for fruit and vegetables.

We found plastic trays and various other containers on the web to segment cheese and cold cuts in the fridge and meats in the freezer.
