Furnace filter?

Anyone ever installed some kind of filter on the furnace intake grill? Seems like it should be a no brainer. A/C has at least a mesh filter, why not the furnace?

The AC has a wet coil that gets stopped up with dust, the heater doesn't.

Sail switch, in the furnace, is sensitive to air flow , changes; like adding a filter; can result in poor furnace performance ; like short cycle or failure to light ; if air flow is restricted.

I looked into the foam filters for return air in my coach , but the number of paths for return air made an install that could cut down on dust , nearly impossible. Researching the return air required for my furnace , made me decide against the install.

Thanks. Sounds like not worth pursuing. Guess I'll try to vacuum more frequently in that area.

The post by Skip426 makes the most sense. However, on my coach, and I suspect on many others, there is only one return air opening directly in front of the furnace. Mine happens to be under the refrigerator and there is ample space around the furnace itself. It would be simple to install a foam type filter behind the opening vent, but the reduction of air flow might cause issues, as described. I don't know as I haven't tried.

The filter is to remove dust from the heat exchanger and ducts. If running your furnace does not produce the burning smell of dust and if dust is not accumulating in the ducts or vents, then a filter is unnecessary.

Majority of RV Furnace Returns are merely a louvered opening that then goes into an OPEN space that leads to furnace case

A filter will do little to keeping furnace clean and could very well impact return air flow causing overheating of heat exchanger
