Generac 40G Won't Start!

We have a 4709 Guardian Quietpact 40G RV Generator & on our last big trip, we had the gen on for the roof air. We'd run it a few times on the trip prior to this with no problems but this time after an hour or so, it shut off and will not start again.

Someone suggested the low oil sensor was bad so DH jumped that and still nothing. He replaced the fuel filter and it still won't start but he discovered that there was no gas in the line thus no gas getting to the generator.

Is there a sensor that would cause gas to shut off or is it likely a plugged fuel line?

Is there something else that should be checked?

Thanks for any help.

Most generators will not operate if the fuel tank is below 1/4 filled. That would account for why there is no fuel in the line. Othe people may have additional ideas. Good luck!

OH MY....

We knew that. I'm trying to remember when we had the problem and I think it was shortly before we filled up but we seldom ever get much below 1/2 before we're hunting for gas.

DH worked on it yesterday without checking the gas level. He *thinks* it's well above a 1/4 but will check this morning.

On one hand, we hope that's all it is... on the other... that would be SO embarrassing!

Thanks for the reminder!

We've tried a few things since...

There is more than 1/4 tank of gas but not by much.

DH changed the fuel filter and noticed when he did that there was no gas coming out of the fuel line. Not sure why... if it's a safety thing or another problem.

He did attach another fuel line to the gen and added gas with a syringe just to see if it would fire and nothing... it cranks but will not start.

He's off to find a fuse although the one that's in it looks fine.

Any suggestions on what to trouble shoot next?

Jumping across the terminals is wrong... remove the wires. Jumping them makes it think there is no oil pressure :-)

DH said he took the wires off and connected them and totally bypassed the sensor.

The carb is enclosed so he can't tell if gas is getting to it. He says that he cannot hear the fuel pump doing anything when the primer switch is on and thinks he should hear at least a clicking sound. He's checked the wiring and it seems secure.

We're at a loss!

Yes you should hear the fuel pump either humming or clicking. Have him try powering the fuel pump with a 12v source instead of using the factory wired 12v wire.... use jumper wires to obtain 12v from the battery lug right there, and a good ground somewhere on the frame or chassis of the genset. IF he can hear the fuel pump run then there is a fuse or something else amiss. If he can't hear the fuel pump run then it has failed.

Thanks!

Looks like he'll be crawling around under the coach again tomorrow.

There is one fuse that we can find and that's right in the front near the circuit breaker. When he took that one out, the gen wouldn't turn over and there was no light on the gen start switch on the dash.

Are there other fuses?

Just an update! Hopefully, it might help others...

It was the fuel pump. We ran out of things to test & try and DH felt it must be the fuel pump since it wasn't making any noise. A HUGE shout out to Stinnett RV in Clarksville, IN for working us in even though they don't work on Generacs. They tried all the same things that we did and then determined that the fuel pump did have power to it.

When we went to pay for the diagnostics, they said no charge.. they didn't fix it so they weren't going to charge us!

Anyway... DH got a fuel pump, put it on and cranked the gen and it RUNS!

Thanks all for the help & suggestions!
