Generac 75D starting problems

I am having several problems getting my Generac diesel 7.5 to start at times. Several times I have started it by just pushing the button and no preheat, but more often than not it wouldn't start. When I push the preheat button for 15-30 seconds,it may start, but usually just cranks very slowly I have had the starter replaced, actually several of them as a couple of them were bad,but that didn't seem to change the problem. The other day, while I was turning it over, and not starting,I saw grey smoke coming out the exhaust pipe, but it wouldn't catch. It was the only time I saw that tho. The same day after trying a number of times over a several hours,it wouldn't even light the light and when I checked the 50 amp breaker,it was popped and very hot.
I'm thinking about several things before I shop it. 1. ask for help on the forum.2.check the battery connections and make sure they're tight and clean. 3. change the switch on the dash.
Another thing is that my build list says there is s'posed to be a slide for the gennie, but it sure doesn't look like it got put in. bummer. How are you s'posed to work on the durn thing if you can't get it out.
