The generator should run fine while traveling down the road, provided the fuel level is above 1/4 tank. Look for a fault code by pressing the stop button once and then count the blinks on the switch. In the owners manual is a fault code chart. Let us know what you find.

More curiosity than anything, but what do you mean by "isolated the gen from the big fuel tank"?

Does power run THROUGH the inverter? Depends, there are, for this discussion, two types of inverters, Pass Through and stand alone. If you have a Pass through, like I do, it acts like a UPS, when you have power, be it generator or shore, it charges the batteries and passes power though, when you loose shore/generator power it switches to inverter mode, Still delivering power to the loads that are on it, but now sucking said power from the batteries.

A Stand alone, may send power to an auto transfer switch which selects the source based on the presence/absence of shore power. or it may send to dedicated outlets.. Many after market installers (usually owners who do their own install) will put a 2nd outlet next to the original outlet for the TV or Radio or whatever they wish inverter powered.. They often use Red, Orange or Yellow (All colors indicating emergency or caution or both) for the inverter (Emergency power) outlets.

NOW: your "Generator shuts off when main engine starts" problem

Most motor homes the Generator and Main engine share the main fuel tank, Differnet pick up tubes and outlets but one tank, The motor home tube does not go down as far as the main engine though so your Generator runs out long about a quarter tank.

HOWEVER if the tank is not properly vented. When the main engine starts a vacuum may be created and if it's strong enough the Generator fuel pump will not be able to suck fuel from the tank. IN the old days this was a Gas Cap issue. Today the vent is somewhere else.

So, you ran a new and separate fuel line to the genny? I had a motorhome that had a fuel line to the genny wear through and the fuel pump couldn't pull fuel to the carburator. Replace the fuel line and good to go. Wore out on a frame cross piece.
