If my coach has shore power and I start the generator my "automatic transfer switch" disconnects the 120VAC shore power and applies the generator 120VAC power to the coach.... (30-45 seconds after the generator starts).... it stays that way while the generator runs.

As usual yours may be wired differently.
However your coach is wired I doubt that running the generator while connected to shore power will damage anything.

(But it is a RV... and with a RV anything is possible).

Why not!

I occasionally start, (and run), my generator while connected to only 20 or 30A service and I need more for any reason.
It has never caused a problem, (that's why RVs have "automatic transfer switches").

BTW, that's especially convenient at night, when it's 110 degrees outside, and/or when it's raining cats and dogs. .. (and when I'm half naked)!

Usually the generator will take precedence over the shore power via the transfer switch. So there is nothing wrong with having shore connected and the generator running. One caveat is to not have the transfer switch change over with high amp loads, such as air conditioning, active.

I like Vinces response. I do turn off the AC or heavy draw appliances before changing from shore power to generator or the other way around. I think or hope it helps extend the life of the transfer switch.
