Generator Smoke on Startup
The Onan RV QC(G)5500 genset seems to have a lot of exhaust smoke on startup. Lasts about 10 - 15 seconds. Unit runs fine, power works. Oil level is OK. Unit is 3+ yrs old, and has about 150 hours on it. It is in a 2018 unit that I purchased used in October of 2019. The genset had been service in March of 2019.
I also see a little oil spitting from exhaust when it first starts.
Any suggestions for what to look for? I'm going to get an appointment with my local Cummins service center to check. I suppose it could have an oil leak internally, which collects and then burns off when it starts?
Amy thoughts appreciated.

The smoke may be an indication that it is running rich. Does it just happen on start up when fully choked?
Are you sure that it is spitting oil, it might is be water that had condensed?

Only on startup. Runs fine otherwise. I'll check on drips from exhaust, wether it is oil or moisture.

Carb needs cleaning, gasoline can go bad in as little as 30-60 days if not treated with Seafoam or Stabil or similar product during storage.
Try dosing your main gas tank with Seafoam next fill-up, it will clean the fuel lines, injectors in main engine and carb on genset.

You are right, I stand corrected, black smoke is overfueling.

Thanks all for your suggestions.
I was able to get the MH into a Cummins/Onan shop. They could not recreate the problem, but did a full diagnosis, let it run both under 50% load and full load, and could find no issues.
The previous owner may have used too light oil when adding oil to the unit. I'm going to keep using it and keep an eye on what happens.
BTW, the Cummins shop here in Ft. Myers, FL was very accommodating. Got me in in one day, called when they said they would, and charged $75.
