Generator trips GFCI

When we are "off-grid" with our MH, it seems that our GFCI outlets trip wherever we use the generator. Does this indicate a problem somewhere, or is it normal?

Check to see if the ground and neutral of the generator are somehow connected. The connection could be either internal or external. If they are, then break the connection.

GFI tripping when using a generator is not normal. This is the first time I have heard of it.

Ground Fault Interrupters trip when the current in the hot wire is not equal to the current in the neutral wire. You may stop the tripping by disconnecting the bond between neutral and ground wire at the generator, but that will not fix the problem. You will still have a ground fault.

Finding ground faults is difficult. Many electricians have difficulty finding them as well.

The ground fault must be in the ground fault circuit. The generator is "ahead" of the GFI so it is unlikely to be the cause. However, some GFI are sensitive to strong radio frequency emissions. If the generator is emitting strong RF it could trip a sensitive GFI. Possibly there is arcing somewhere in the generator circuits.

Otherwise, a ground fault in the GFI circuit would trip when powered by either generator or shore power.

If you have an auto transfer switch. That could be the problem. If not that, then some wiring on the generator side of the switch or cable to the socket you plug into is not right. I know nothing about generator wiring. But I would guess it is tried & true. Leaving the house wiring from it in suspicion.

The ground and neutral should be connected. With generater power being the source, thats where bonding takes place.

Is there anything your leaving plugged in when off grid that may be causing the GFCI to trip ?

Inspect the plug adapter you're using to plug into the generator. It could be shorted out or you need a neutral ground bond plug. https://amzn.to/3nDiLKm
