How to tell if struts on A&E Power awning are shot?

We have an A&E Weather Pro Power awning. The RV is a 2008 and I suspect the awning is original. I keep seeing threads about replacing the gas struts. I wondered if ours were bad and so I searched but everything I could find dealt with finding replacements and installing them.


I would like to know how I can tell if ours are shot or not. Can anyone tell me the symptoms please.

Our awning has troubles but I don't now if they are just the way these work or could be the struts. Ours can't handle a breeze. It slaps up and down. The framework folds and lets the canvas flap alarmingly. The awning used to stop when bringing the awning in really hot weather in but it doesn't now. I might need to tighten the spring too but mainly I want to find out about the struts.

From what you described it sounds like they are weak for sure. It's normal for these to require replacement after 3 to 10 years. Other than removing them and testing them it's going to be nearly impossible to test them. If they are leaking or have leaked from the piston side then they need replaced.

In general, awnings don't like being out in the wind. When the wind comes up, it's best to put them away to avoid damage.

Judging from your picture, I see the strut still has enough power to put a bow in the support it's fastened to. Do they both look the same way?
