Have a bag or two of wooden clothespins handy. Bend the spring to open the coils, and clip a clothespin on the coil. Keep doing that until the spring is extended long enough to hang on the hooks on the jack base and piston. Extend the jack and remove the clothespins.

This video shows an alternate method using pieces of paint sticks. Same idea, bend and open the coils, insert something to hold that gap in the spring to lengthen it. I like clothespins because they won't fall out as you're bending the spring to insert more.

That's the same thing we were doing, only with metal washers. Believe it or not, the only issues we ran into, were not having QUITE enough thicker ones, and having to pick all of 'em up when I extended the jacks.

The sound they made when they hit the ground all at once was HILARIOUS. It sounded like someone throwing a bag of quarters off the roof onto the pavement!
