The hoses on our leveling jack system are some sort of thermoplastic material (SAE100R8 designation)... I got a quote to replace a hose that is torn, and the stuff is $4.40 per foot. Regular rubber hydraulic hose with similar pressure rating (SAE100R2 designation) is $1.20 per foot.
Do I really need the thermoplastic stuff? Granted, the original lines are 22 years old and look like new, but the fittings rust out before the hose goes bad anyways, so is it really necessary? Thoughts?

Take the hose to a hydraulic repair shop and get their opinion.
I worked in the mining industry for ~30 years and have bought all sorts of hydraulic hoses and fitting.
I looked at the specifications and what stands out is that the SAE100R2 is a 2 wire reinforced hose while the SAE100R8 has a synthetic fiber reinforcing. The real difference will be how flexible it is as to getting in and around tight spots. The wire braided hose would probably be stiffer.
In the document I looked at the pressure ratings were the same.
If you think you can use the SAE100R2 hose I don't see a problem.

I just can't figure out why the manufacturer would use something that's almost 4 times the cost if there wasn't a good reason. I see that the R8 will bend a 2" radius, while the R2 only a 4". The R8 has a polyurethane "abrasion resistant" shell, while the R2 has a rubber "oil and abrasion resistant shell.
I checked the radius of the bends near the control valve to be sure the R2 hose would work, and it looks good to me. I slept on it last night and this morning I ordered 25' of the R2 for $65 with shipping and PA sales tax. Not bad... The R2 is apparently the most common hose around, so it stands to reason it would be the cheapest. I did read something about the thermoplastic hose being better for synthetic oils, but I believe this system is filled with good old fashioned Dexron III...
