Kohler Generator-Replace or Repair

I recently purchased a 1994 Monaco 40' DP. I was made aware at that time of generator not working. Unit is 7.5 Kohler diesel, starts ok, but shuts off as soon as start switch is released. I've just been advised by my repair shop (not an RV dealer) brushes are bad, will work some time if brushes are played with, but they don't know where to find replacements brushes. I live in southern OH, would RV dealer have these or would they have to come from some electric shop? Unit also has a crappy exhaust system (pipes come apart when generator is sled out-must get under coach to line them up when sliding generator back in) anyone out there know if this can be replaced with a solid system that remains in tact when sliding unit out?

Hi Ronbstewart,
The short recommendation is for you to consider fixing what you have. Find a certified repair shop (recommended by Kohler). The reason for the problem mentioned in the OP could have several possible fixes. As to the exhaust problem, when it comes down to it, how many times will you be pulling out the generator? A new generator must have an exhaust. The exhaust must end beyond the coach body. It is not clear to me that a new generator would help your exhaust problem.

Thanks for your reply, since my last post I have located a place that has the required 4 brushes and springs ($68.38 total) it's only about 40 miles from where I live, my wife is picking parts up now. Guess I can learn to live with or modify the exhaust system on mine, on most generators complete exhaust moves in and out with generator making them a lot quieter.
