Kwikee Steps issue

Hi I need a 12 volt battery and well I don’t want to purchase one nor do I want to pull my car battery just to test with the pigtail from Kwikee. Is it possible to use a battery charger as the battery? Asking if it’s safe to do this. Asking for a friend😊

I don't know but if I wanted to test it I'd be finding a battery to hook up to. How many amps do the steps draw? I think you need clean DC voltage or the steps might not operate in a normal way.

Most chargers want, most jump boxes will. Be careful don’t get caught in steps opening and closing.

Good plan to use a battery. Most battery chargers wouldn't be able to supply enough power for the steps and you'd have that variable to contend with that might throw you off.

If you are just testing, then you could always use a smaller 12VDC lawn mower battery.

That's what I used. I also extended the wires on the "pig tail" so that they would reach out from under the steps so that they would not get caught in the steps or the steps on me. Made it much easier then laying on your back to test the steps. I used a trailer wiring harness and trailer wiring connectors.

I know the OP has gotten it done but thought I'd post this about the charger I got last Christmas. It's the Genius 10 and can be used as a 12 volt power supply. Up to 10 amps so I'm thinking it would have worked fine for testing the steps.

NOCO chargers aren't the cheapest. I have several of them and they definitely perform. https://no.co/brands/noco-genius

Well I used jumper cables along with the Kwikee pigtail. I tested my steps as well as Spoke to Lippert technical support ( Lippert purchased Kwikee ). Technical support confirmed my controller was bad. Ordered a new one that will arrive in a couple of days.

Have issues with Kwikee steps call Lippert Industries.

Well even talking with the tech rep and we diagnosed the controller, I needed to make room for the replacement so I disconnected the arm from the step pulling the pin. Then noticed motor in a bind, unbolted 3 bolts holding the motor to the gearbox. Then thought to reattach the arm back to the steps then reattached the 3 bolts and motor. Then turned on the 12volt power and THE STEPS WORKED. So now I am keeping the controller for a spare. I probably should have checked this before but glad my steps are working.

Now to do preventative maintenance on the Vacuflush change out duckbills and bellows.

Glad your steps are working now! I know how that is. Mine were jamming in the up position due to step covers we put on. My solution was to put some screws in to serve as spacers so the steps wouldn't quite retract the whole way. Removing the motor while the steps were up so that they could be un-jammed was difficult the first time or two, and hopefully it won't be necessary anymore. My problem would probably have been diagnosed as a control board issue, too, but sometimes it's just a simple mechanical problem.

Good luck with the VacuFlush!

If your motor was binding up, then likely the plastic gear is getting worn, If I were you, I'd get a spare motor.
