Leaving generator running for 2 hours unattended

Hi,

I need to run my generator today or tomorrow
to charge batteries but daytime highs are 10F.

Sitting in the coach at 10f is too cold for me so was going to leave and run some errands.

I would plug in two oil electric oil filled radiators to put a load on and run the furnace.

Is leaving the coach unattended ok?

Thanks,

I've left my generator running for hours unattended. Never worried about it.

Dare I ask what the story behind that was?

Jobsite boondocking, 12 hour shifts, hot bunking with another driver.. Daytime temps well above 110 deg, 95 to 100 at night.. only thing provided was water and a 55 gal drum buried for sewer with a 25' length of leach line.
Nearest power line and paved road was 30 miles away..

I will run ours overnight while boondocking or at a cracker barrel or whatever. They are quiet inverter type and on Eco mode so they don't do much but idle. I like having the AC fan or a house box fan running while I sleep.

Wow, I have had an easy life compared to you and a lot of other people, I guess. Did you have to leave to fuel or did they deliver it? How long did a tank of fuel last and what size fuel tank? I won't ask about taking care of the buried 55-gallon drum, though. TMI...

They just ran the equipment fuel truck over once a week to refill the diesel tank (200 gal)..gen set burns 1 gal an hour more or less.
The "old school" septic system worked very well, had no issues at all.....Same as a S & B or an RV campground with a septic tank system..

Post Safety of leaving a generator running unattended

Hello everyone,

Generators are quite beneficial during power outages or natural disasters, but it's essential to use them safely. A common question that arises is the safety of leaving a generator running unattended. Although possible, it's not advisable due to risks like fire hazards, carbon monoxide poisoning, and potential damage to the generator.

Running a generator unattended can cause carbon monoxide buildup, pose a fire risk, and may lead to overheating or mechanical failure. It might also attract theft or vandalism and cause noise disturbances.

Safer alternatives exist, such as automatic standby generators, transfer switches, and using remote monitoring systems. It's also recommended to install smoke detectors, use timers, ensure proper ventilation, and set up security measures.

Stay safe!

Best regards,

Old post, commonly asked....
Sure some caution and common sense is required...
If running and onboard RV Genny, most are designed to have exhaust directed away and one should be mindful of any exhaust pointed at a neighbor,,etc

There was a company selling vertical stacks to push exhaust up..

Remote popular gennys like the honda 3000, predator 3500 etc etc,, work well.. Same deal point position away to not be a noise issue or exhaust issue..

By the book these portables should NOT be refueled while running but most of us are careful and can do it..
Our Onboards are fueled from RV tank and can run a long while...

As far as running time.. LET them RUN,, have good fresh oil when you start and enjoy.. My personal choice is to change oil at 100-150 hrs of hard use , AC on etc.. That is week of constant use... now many onan onboards I am sure can run longer and constant use is their design...

I have a variety of portables and my on board.. small 3500 knock offs with care, oil and service,, are 7-12 years old, one has 2800 hrs..
I used one on memorial day, ran friday night to monday nite non stop.., my one honda 1000 I got in 2007 and ran weekend for 30-35 weekend a year,, for 12+ years running equipment/charging..is finally using some oil...she needs some lucas. LOL

That is my take... enjoying RVing.. and using you gennys..
