Marquis 5500 error code 36

Let me start by saying I've read all of the posts relating to this and they don't match my problem.

First a bit of history. There are 2500 hours on this genny, I ran it all summer with no problems. I'm in the SoCal desert and temps hit 117F during the hottest part of the summer, I ran both AC units, TV, Sat. Receiver with no problems. I've changed the oil/filter every 200 hours, new air and fuel filter last week. Here's the problem.

If I run the generator in the heat of the day, ambient temp. right now is 98F, it will run both AC's for about 20 minutes then it dies with a code 36. If I wait until about 6PM and the sun is way down, I can run everything for hours with no failures. The rig is oriented in such a was as to present the generator directly to the sun from 8A to 5P. During the summer the sun is directly overhead and the generator doesn't get hit directly, it's shaded most of the day.

Now, could I be experiencing some sort of vapor lock? That's the only thing I can see that would stop it during the heat of the day but run all night when it's cooler.

One additional observation. When it fails the engine is extremely hot, I mean really hot. However, the oil filter is just warm. I would think the filter casing should be as hot as the engine. I don't know if this means anything or not.

Any and all input is appreciated and thanks for your time.

Paul

Problem solved. It ended up being an intermittent fuel pump. Two days ago I disconnected the line from the pump to the carb and was pumping fuel 6" up in the air. After I posted yesterday I checked again and the gas was just dribbling out of the pump. This morning I installed an old pump I had and it's working fine. In the future, if this happens again I'm not screwing around, just replace the pump, a 30 minute job.
