My Electric Water Heater just failed suddenly? Gas Water Heat won't actuate either?

Hello forum!

A small tech question for those that may have experienced this.. All worked fine in my Jayco 24rdb White Hawk travel trailer. Took a nice hot shower this morning... Now the water heater not working, so i clicked on gas as the backup but i hear nothing, no flame.. However the gas heat works fine, gas ignites, all other appliances working, all fuses good..

Can anyone lead me in any direction fro troubleshooting here?

Thanks!

Tom

I've never experienced gas AND electric operation failures simultaneously. I found a very complete web site that explains most or all troubleshooting given the issues you have. Personally I would check the thermal cut off switch first- it's located from the outside from the vented door.

You have an Atwood Combo Water Heater

It uses 12VDC as control for BOTH electric & propane
*In RV on the DC Dist Panel ---Fuse for Water Heater --if blown/no DC to electric/gas on/off switches
(not listed on DC Fuse Label.....so could be #4 or #5)

In outside compartment:
*2A fuse on circuit board -- if blown/no DC (replace and see if it blows again)

*thermal cutoff fuse in the clear plastic sleeve -- if blown/no DC (remove and connect brown wire directly to t-stat terminal to test electric/propane functions)

*circuit board failure

Those are the most common items to affect BOTH electric & propane

Wiring diagram ---follow the DC

Unusual for thermal cutoff to blow when on electric element

It blows at 190*F ---one time device.
If blown has to be replaced

In order for thermal cutoff to be exposed to 190*F it comes from 'blow back' of flame from combustion chamber due to obstruction/blockage in chamber

OR possibly water shorting it out from dripping T&P Relief Valve

Glad you found the issue.....
