New Onboard Generator Recommenations?

Hey folks,

I have a Onan Marquis 5500 generator in my 99 Fleetwood Southwind with about 700 hours on it.

Well, I just brought it into Cummins for repairs (no voltage but runs fine). They told me the voltage regulator is shot ($700 part) and estimated the total cost of repair at $1700 Cdn.

At that price and with the age of the unit, would anybody recommend I fix or replace the generator. If I replaced,I thought about going with a Honda (u/k model?)

They can only recommend another Onan as its Cummins I'm chatting with.

Anybody have an insight on this? Pricing guesstimates?

Thanks! 😎Click image for larger version

Eg6500 $1979 (Cdn)

Doesn't include installation. Hmmm

IMO the Honda is the better gas unit. I would over kill with the 6500.

I'd get an electric start Honda inverter generator and rig a remote start as well as remote Eco switch. It should be much quieter than the Onan and more fuel efficient. And, of course, more watts is better.

This is the same generator I have. If the regulator is bad you could change yourself. It has two screws holding it and one modular plug. I have seen them used from $195 to $245 new online. Part number is 305–0826.

The manual......

Thanks guys! We were kinda rushed to get it done, so sadly I was at their mercy!

Cummins Diesel/Onan got me for $1600 repair bill to diagnose & replace the voltage regulator and clean the slip rings.
