Noisy A/C unit
The front roofmount A/C unit on my 2000 Dutch Star is still cooling just fine, but it has begun to be rather loud. Do I have a technician look at it or just run it until I get a real failure?

It just depends on the type of noise. If it's something as simple as cleaning as mentioned or vibrating fan blade those are easy fixes. It it's a compressor going out, then service is a waste of time and money. As a general rule, these A/C units are not serviceable outside of simple things.

Those plastic hamster wheel fan blades are prone to break and make quite a racket. It is an easy inexpensive repair.

If you can tell us what kind of noise it's making, and when, we could be more help.
For instance mine has recently started making more noise, it's higher pitched, like quiet howl or a loud high pitched humming. It comes and goes, and happens at all time, not just when the compressor is running. To me it sounds just like a bearing going out. I took a mechanic's stethoscope to the roof, took the cover off the AC unit and listen to things as it was running. As I expected the noise is loudest at the blower motor, so I've ordered a new motor and will be installing it later this week.

Know someone whose Coleman AC units were making lots of noise. Turned out to be the bearings on the motor shaft.and he was able replace them which resolved his issue.

My front AC started to act up, definitely louder but started to pull higher amps and kicking the breaker. I found the fan motor was almost froze up. When I replaced I found that the rubber isolators the fan was mounted on were pretty much gone, which allowed the fan to squat and the fan blade was actually hitting the metal shroud causing noise. After I replace the motor the fan was much quieter and pulled fewer amps.

I hesitated to spend so much on that item...but WOW...it really is worth it for the quiet.

So I cleaned the unit...it was quite dirty and straightened all the cooling fins. Noise comes and goes now but I have determined it is not fan related. I can run the fan on low, high or auto with no change in noise level. So it must be the cooling unit.
On another topic, I really don't like my Duo-Therm thermostat as it is weird switching between zones and does not have a current temp reading...just set point temp. Any suggestions for a dual zone, heat, cool and heat pump thermostat?
