Noisy fan in air conditioner

When our front air came on the fan made a horrible noise, like a bunch of silver wear was in there. I shut it off, tried it again, the same thing. Shut it off for about 15 minutes and when it came on it was fine. Now sometimes when it comes on it sounds like it is going to make noise and then it is okay. Any ideas? Is it safe to let it run. Is there something we can check. Thanks for any help

By front air , do you mean the dash air conditioner or the front of two roof mounted air conditioners?

Sorry, I should have specified the roof air. It has been okay, but still every so often it seems to have a hard time starting and has that funny noise.

Sounds Like a dry fan motor bearing. Put oil on each end of motor were shaft goes into motor. Or could be mud dobber or something getting into fan to make it out of balance. It would help also if you said how old unit is.

The unit is 6 years old. We are traveling out west and have been in places that have lots of moths, dirt, lots of wind, so maybe something got in. I will have to go up there and have a look. Thank you. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Playing card in the spokes? I would check for leaves, rodents and other stuff. Remove outside cover to check condenser fan and remove inside cover and possible ductwork to check evap fan. Ccrider may be right with bearings if no crud is found.

The fans were noisy on both my air conditioners. The rubber grommets that support the motors were worn out. I ordered kits from the factory and replaced them myself. HUGE difference!

Thanks for all the info. We are at Tiffin and they said the noise was caused by they tape coming off the gadget that opens and closes. They also replaced the bat cage. Now when it comes on it it takes forever for the fan to come on. They listened and said that was normal. Sounds like a jet engine when it first starts but cools great. Does anyone else have that problem with the fan.
