Question Onan 5000 Emerald Plus keeps dying

Genset runs fine as long as you hold the starter switch down. Once you release it, it dies. I've checked the fuel pump, the oil pressure sensor, changed the oil and filter, new plugs, and the electronic control board. Fuel tank is full of fresh fuel and fuses are good. Cleaned the carb and air intake. I'm running out of ideas and money. Any other ideas? The fact that it runs so well (no matter how long I hold the start switch down) is throwing me.

On the onan, the fuel pump is working while the engine start button is pushed to start. A relay is supposed to take over that function when you release the start button and the engine is running. I believe it takes its signal from the oil pressure sending unit. Are you sure the fuel pump is continuing to run after the engine starts up? While the pump might be ok, the running circuit may be at fault. Probably something in the oil pressure sending unit/wiring.

Even if the fuel pump stopped, when letting go of the start switch, the engine would run for a minute or so, just from the gas in the carb bowl. That's not the problem.

Some generators will not continue to run if not making electricity. You could hook a AC volt meter to the generator output and check that.

Thanks to all for you're responses. FYI...
It turned out to be a bad voltage regulator. To quote the repairman, "The genset will die if the circuit board detects that it is not producing electricity".
