Onan 5500 dtc 37

First I want to thank all of you that take the time to read and try to help fellow RV'rs when in need.
So my emerald 5500 will start and run for maybe 30- 45 seconds then shuts down and flashes a dtc 37.Invalid genset configuration, wrong frequency/ rpm ratio. It is a new to me 2004 fleetwood terra. I started the generator checked the a/c units worked when I bought it. Nothing traumatic since but now have issues. Any ideas?
Thanks
Joe

Hello and sorry for your issues. I would first start by looking at your stator assembly. If accessible pull your brushes out of the stator assembly and look at the reluctor rings. They are probably dirty and or corroded. Look up on you tube for how to clean, pretty simple process. Once the reluctor rings are clean then put a new set of brushes in them. Also is the generator surging when it does run? If so it could be just a carburetor issue, the engine has to run at a steady pace in order for the generator to produce electricity. If the motor is surging then this could be your issue. Good luck and let us know what you find out

Onan 5500 FTC 37

When I bought the RV one of the issues was a bad fuel pump so I dropped the 70 gal tank and replaced the pump. And actually didn't completely drop the tank, just far enough to reach up and get the pump out and in. Big mistake! The rv had been sitting for a number of years and some how accumulated 3" of black death on the bottom and as soon as I started the engine it pumped into the fuel system and of course I started the generator before I thought things through. After taking the tank out and doing a detergent and 3/4 " nuts shake down, rinse and repeat then applying tank liner and rolling til dry then blowing fuel lines clear, replacing injectors, filter.... you get where I'm going with this.
So yes I removed the carb, rebuilt and same thing with fuel lines and filter. Actually replaced the generator fuel lines, pump and filter. It ran fine supplied power to both a/c, microwave and fridge for about 20 min then died showing dtc 37. I will see if I can get to the brushes but my experience with rv generators I will more than likely have to take the set out. Will keep you all in the loop.
Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe and thanks for the update boss. Yea I removed my generator as well to clean the reluctor rings and replace the brushes. Might as well do a complete tune up on it while it is out and maybe even send your control board away to be bench tested as well. This way you can rule out any issues with the control board as well. I believe flight systems will bench test for 50.00 dollars, well worth it if you already have the genny out. Good luck sir, sounds like your on the right track.
