Hi Golfr, nah it looks like a DIY if you read and follow the instructions. I feel your frustrations. Sometimes when faced with issues like this you tend to throw money at it like a drunker. One of my thought were to reach in and try to hold the throttle plate shaft steady , not sure you can reach or if you can work against the governor linkage. Inside the crankcase is a centrifugal device that is gear driven and calibrated to a certain rpm range. Outside the crankcase housing is a shaft and lever ,that lever can be adjusted. There is also a balance spring that's adjustable. Just read carefully and you'll be fine.

I don't know if the OP fixed the generator, but my Dad had same identical problem with his. After 3 mechanics, he took it to a guy who is an Onan specialist who now works out of his house. Turned out to be a diode in the back (not front panel) of the generator. It would get hot and shut it off after running for a few minutes.
