Today we got back to our campground after spending a couple days at Crosspoint Cummins in Normal, IL. The reason was to have the 1000 hour service. The background on that decision is that I really couldn't get enough of a feel from previous records on the overall service history of the generator. The genny is 8 years old and had 701 hours. Being full timers we decided to bite the bullet and do it instead of just the normal stuff or even a slimmed down, 500 hour service. We also wanted both to give it the best chance to NOT fail, and if something did go bad we had grounds to avoid an ESW hassle for lack of maintenance.
The 1000 hour service basically removes and replaces everything attached to the genny. For reference the estimates for a 500 hour service was about $925 and the 1000 hour was $1915.
2 things were done that were not part of the estimate. The first was that the coolant reservoir was cracked (added $67) and the weirdest/scariest was that all 4 bolts holding the generator on the slide were....GONE!

Regarding the missing bolts, I was told it isn't as rare as you might think. Originally the generators are mounted on the slide rails with self tapping bolts and if too much torque is used during the installation the bolt heads are weakened. The tech told me he has seen at least 3 other generators with 2 or more broken mounting bolts. They removed the old bolts, re-tapped the holes and installed new bolts.
So....even with the added part and labor fixing the broken bolts the final bill came in at $1725. I think that is a first for me to see a bill less than the estimate and more work being done too.
So...even if you don't think you need to "overhaul" your genny, take some time to inspect the mounting bolts to make sure you have them all.
