Question Onan Generator Start-Up Problem

My Class C is equipped with a Cummins Onan generator that recently developed a problem I haven't had before.

It will start with little difficulty, but after running for just about a minute or so it will shut down.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on what the problem might be and how to fix it.

Do you get any codes?

First thought is low oil, clogged air filter, oil level sensor failure, then fuel restriction/failing pump. There are a bunch of threads from people with more knowledge, but that is where I would start.

You don't mention the hours on it but if over 300 or 400 and the fuel filter hasn't been changed since then, I'd start there.

When you start the generator, there is a 30 second delay, before the transfer switch ( if equipped ) connects the generator to your RV systems. Once power is being used, the generator develops more power and needs more gas to run. If the filter is partatly blocked, the carb will run out of gas and the generator will stop.

Ignore all of this if it runs on propane.

My RV is a 2006 Phoenix Cruiser, so it only has a simple indicator light. The oil was recently changed prior to this problem cropping up.

check out your generator manual. there should be a troubleshooting code section. our generator will show a series of flashes on the start button. that is your troubleshooting code.
