Please help me fix this onan 10k diesel generator

We just bought a used food truck that came with a 10k diesel generator. It has had a lot of work done to it in the past from the dealership and other shops. They’ve changed out the fan, water pump, temp sensor, fuel pump and filter etc. I have paper work on all of it. The generator has 5k hours. It will turn on and run good when it’s cold for about 10 mins then turn off. Then you turn it right back on for a minute and it turns off. Is there a way to check the temp sensor. I know it’s new but maybe it’s bad or the wiring going to it? Anything else I should look for? I’ve used a temp gun on the motor and it’s not over heating. I’ve check the code and it seems to be “one” flash. Any help is appreciated.

If not an overheat shutdown then try a real fuel check. Use a clear tubing fuel line from a can of fuel: does the pump draw and will it run? If yes then you have a bad fuel line in your truck>new line. This is hardly ever used to diagnose but is in the top of the list in Onan recommendations.

Good Luck

Also check your coolant as outlined in the attached manual. IF you have an air lock from improper fill or top off AND your new sensor is working properly you will get the shutdown in about ten minutes until it is filled properly.

Again...Good Luck and let us know when and how you resolve the issues.

After playing with it today I can tell it’s getting very hot. The small coolant hose that goes to the top back hosing is very hot. It had the water pump and thermostat changed out not too long ago along with the fan.

I believe I have two issues going on. The generator will run for a long period of time after I removed the coolant reservoir cap. Possibly it had air in the system from the previous people that worked on it?? After it runs for about two hours it did turn off and I got code 36. I tried to start it right back up and it would not start. Seem to not be getting fuel. I quickly hard wired the fuel pump to a battery I had laying around and it started right up. Tomorrow I will try and hard wire the pump and see if it will run longer than the 2 hours I got out of it today.

Control board issues are not uncommon on the 10k generators, especially when it comes to running the fuel pump. You need to monitor the fuel pump voltage.

That’s exactly what it is. I hot wired the fuel pump today and it ran for 6 hours without issues. I don’t think we want to put a new control board on it. Is there a good and safe was to hot wire the fuel pump?

The fuel pump shut off that goes through the control board prevents an engine damaging event from occurring. Bypassing that safety is a bad idea. A control board is a lot cheaper than a replacement generator.
