Propane Gas Detector

The other day Thursday we went to our RV to exercise the generator and A/C unit and to get out of the heat and humidity.
Any way when we first started the generator we had the entrance door open (we have a Jamboree 26Q) and a couple of minutes with the generator running the Propane Detector went off. I don't think we had set anything in front of it. Any way after about a minute it quit beeping. a couple of minute later it started beeping again, by this time we had the entrance door closed and the A/C unit running. It went off twice more. We did not have the propane turned on. The way our RV is parked there is a cargo trailer parked right beside us (stacked like cord wood in the storage lot) We closed all of the vents, the CO detector never went off.

Then after we were there for about an hours running the A/C and the generator the generator stopped (before it stopped it was like it was running out of fuel) I checked the fuel gauge and it showed just under a 1/4 tank of gasoline. (so I'm sure it below the fuel pick up point in the tank because the generator was running great. It started up with no problems and it started maybe with in 25 sec. of push the start button.
Tomorrow I will go fuel up the RV so we can go out of town in a couple of weeks, then put some Sea Foam in the tank.

My question is I have read that these detectors go bad after a couple of years, it's the OEM one that came in the RV, so does it seem that it's time to get a new one. Also can I replace this myself or should I take it to the RV shop and have them do it? With the cost of stuff these days is it easy enough to do this myself?
Does Amazon sell these? Or Camping World? Maybe Lowe's or Home Depot.

Thanks in advance.

I am no expert but here is what I have found out:
  • Yes, these things have a life of about 5 years
  • If it has not been done lately, get a "can of air" and blow it out or vacuum.
  • Seems that most anything can set it off, flatulence being the most common
  • You can replace them yourself, just pay attention to the wiring. A multi-meter can be helpful
  • Amazon, Camping World and most RV places sell these. They are not cheap.
  • If it is mounted low, i.e., close to the floor, might want to consider a flush mount. Surface mount will stick out
  • Seems that Safe-T-Alert is about the only company making these now-a-days.
  • CCI (who made mine) no longer exists.
If I had to guess, it was probably exhaust gases from the gen that caused it to go off. Oh, I've also read that low-batter can cause it as well.

Hope that helps.

Most overlooked problem with these is age as already mentioned and evaporated "P" traps and water in toilet bowl, allowing holding tank gases into the RV. If stored for over a month, the traps need to be wetted or filled. Try using cheap vegetable oil to "cap" the water in the trap.
