Propane: tank gauge vs. indoor monitor

Our new-to-us rig has a dial gauge screwed into the tank (reads just over 1/4 full) and an indoor panel that includes a propane readout (reads about 3/4 full). The wires for the panel go to the tank mechanical gauge - evidently a combined unit of some sort.

Any ideas about the discrepancy? I will be having the tank filled in the next couple of weeks, so I'll see how it changes and how much propane it takes.

Thanks!

There is a float with a magnet inside the tank. The gauge just follows that magnet, there is no hole, the gauge can be removed. The gauge has an electric wire going to the inside gauge. A bad electrical connection can cause the discrepancy. You can remove the gauge and use a magnet to see if the indoor and outdoor gauge follow each other.

If it's not a bad connection, read the manual for the interior monitor (on line if needed) and find how to calibrate the propane gauge. On my interior monitors, the calibration for propane is to be done when the tank is full, so this may be the opportune time for you, as well.

Thanks to you both for the ideas & insights! I'm now a bit better equipped to do some troubleshooting
